What happens to your soul when you die?

Your "soul" is who you really are. It is the inner person, often referred to as the "heart." Your body is but the house of the soul. When you die, your body goes to the grave. Your question is, where does the soul go?'

On this subject there is virtually no disagreement in Christian circles. Every person will give an account of their life.  "And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment." (Hebrews 9:27)  Those who are found righteous by virtue of faith in Christ as their personal savior will go to heaven. Those who do not know Christ will be damned to eternal punishment in the lake of fire.

The Bible tells us that upon death the believer goes immediately to heaven. "...whether it be by life, or by death. For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain...having a desire to depart, and to be with Christ; which is far better." (Philippians 1:20-23).  In 2 Corinthians 5:6 & 8 the Apostle Paul points out that while you are alive your soul is present in your body and when you die you go instantly to be with Jesus, " Therefore we are always confident, knowing that, whilst we are at home in the body, we are absent from the Lord:  We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord."

For the unbeliever the fate is much different. " But the fearful, and unbelieving, and abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death." (Revelation 21:8)

The Bible has alot to say about hell and judgment. It will be the eternal place of torment for the disembodied spirits of those who do not receive the provision of the sacrifice for sin offered on the cross of Calvary by Jesus Himself. Ephesians 2:8-9 says that we receive it by faith, it is a gift that cannot be earned.

I trust that you have acknowledged your sin and made your way to the cross. If not you can....right now. All you need to do is to recognize that you are a sinner, repent, and receive the work of Christ as the only answer to your sin issue. As you do, the Bible says that our sin is washed away and we are righteous in the eyes of God. He sees us clothed, not in our own righteousness which is like filthy rags (Isaiah 64:6), but in the righteousness of Jesus.

If you are trusting in Jesus for your salvation, you can rest assured that the moment you die you will be in the presence of your Savior. If you need more information on accepting Christ, I know your Pastor would love to talk to you about it.
