How do you explain the dinosaurs and the scientists that claim the earth is much older than Christians believe?
This is a question that many struggle with. Allow me to pass on two possible answers.
First, the earth may be a lot older than most Christians believe. Some people believe that there was a great gap of time between Genesis 1:1 (In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth) and Genesis 1:2 (And the world was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the waters.) Note that there is already water in v.2. This is known as the old earth view or the “gap” theory. This theory says that the creation account of Genesis 1:2 and following is a recreation of the already existent and now chaotic earth.
A second possibility is that the earth was created with age built into it. It may have been created with a fossil record already in place. When Adam was formed he was not a baby…he was created a man…with age created into him. When God spoke the trees into being, they were already years old…though it was their first day in existence. When God created this planet, the same may well be true.
Evolutionists will often try to get us to commit to a specific age we believe the earth is. I like to answer with these profound words: “I don’t know.” The fact of the matter is, they don’t either. They have theories. But so do we. I have presented two of them to you today.
